Billboard Top 10?

http://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200#/charts/rap-albums

So today I decided to take a look at the Billbaord’s top 10 rap albums just to check if hip hop was still dead. And surely, it was as dead as ever.  The Blueprint 3 at number 1 wass acceptable but then I moved on to number 2. There I stumbled upon Drake’s album. I don’t even understand how Drake can even be considered a rapper. He sings for half his songs and then starts talking about nonsense. I can’t stress enough that this kind of music is why hip hop and rap are getting a bad reputation. It doesnt take a genius to know that Drake can’t rap or even sing. Next on the list was this guy named Lil Boosie who may be even worse than Drake. Seems like everyone nowadays names themselves Lil’ just like Lil’ Wayne. Back in the day when hip hop was still raw, everyone was Big (Big L, Big Pun, Notorious BIG). Coincidence? Maybe. I didn’t even bother looking at the rest of the list, thinking as long as these 2 are on the list, the list must be trash. I just wish that one day I would be looking on the chart to see rappers like Nas and Rakim near the top. Unfortunately, they are only getting older and Lil Wayne is only getting more popular. When will people open thier eyes to realize that their ears have been polluted throughout thier lives?

Ghostface Killah – Ghostdini:Wizard of Poetry

Ghostdini_Wizard_of_PoetryGhostface’s new album Wizard Of Poetry shows a new side of him. A new side which I do not really enjoy. Just by looking at the album cover, I immedeatly knew that this album was going to be bad and I was right. Instead of the loud and fast-paced rapping of Ghostface I expected to hear, I heard R&B. Yes, Ghostface stated that his new album was going to be R&B inspired but featuring artists like Ne-Yo is beyond inspired. Although I only listened to half of the tracks from this album (didn’t bother to listen to anymore after the first few), so far they are really disappointiing. Some of his songs have autotune and sound like something Lil Wayne would put on his album. The 13th track of the album, Shes A Killah featuring Ron Brownz is one of the worst tracks I’ve ever heard by Ghostface. His other track Stapleton Sex is just a garbarge song about him fucking a girl. I just wish that he would go back to his old style and never go commercial again. I really think the new concept produced a horrible result and he should learn from his mistakes to come out stronger on his next album.

Detox

drdredetoxAfter 2 Classic albums, Dr. Dre has been working on his final album Detox. Detox has been scheduled to be released as early as 2004, but everytime a date is set, it is delayed for unkown reasons. The final release date is said to be on November of 2009. I’ve been waiting 5 years for this album and it better not be disappointing. Some of the confirmed guests on the album are some of my favourite rappers. Nas, Ice Cube, Jay-Z and Eminem are all supposed to be featured on Detox. Unfortunately others such as Lil Wanye and 50 Cent will be joining them. I can’t wait for this album to drop and I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

The Firm

The firm was a hip hop group consisting of 4 members. One of the members, Cormega was later replaced by Nature.

nassNas – Nasir Jones known as Nas is a rapper from Queensbridge. He dropped out of high school but still maintained a high degree of literacy and a wide range of vocabulary which is evident in his lyrics. His debut album Illmatic is widely considered as one of the best hip hop albums of all time. Nas is well known for his feud with Jay-Z.

band_img_small_4893AZ – Anthony Cruz known as AZ is a rapper from Brooklyn. A long time rapping partner of Nas, he was the only guest on Nas’ debut album, Illmatic. AZ released his debut album in 1995, Doe or Die. He is known for his multi-syllabic rhyming pattern.

070822foxy-brownFoxy Brown – Inga Fung Marchand known as Foxy Brown is a female rapper from Brooklyn. She won a talent show in Brooklyn when she was a teenager and drew the attention of producers. The Trackmasters produced her debut album, Ill Na Na which sold very well. Foxy brown is considered as one of the most successful female rappers.

cormega02Cormega – Cory McKay known as Cormega is a rapper from Queensbridge. Cormega grew up in Queensbridge forming childhood friendships with notable rappers such as Nas and Mobb Deep. He witnessed his mother’s murder when he was 4 years old and went to jail when he was a teen. After being released from jail, he released a debut album The Realness. He is known for talking about inner-city life in his songs. He disbanded from the group after a feud with Nas’ managaer Steve Stoute.

treach_001_240408Nature – Jermain Baxter known as Nature is a rapper from Queensbridge. He went to school with Nas, who noticed his talent for rhyming. Nature was introduced to The Firm as a replacement for Cormega. He released his first album For All Seasons  in 2000. He eventually got into a lyrical battle with Nas after The Firm disbanded.

The Firm’s first song was amazing but after Cormega left, their first and only album disappointed me. The songs were aimed to be mainstream and there wasn’t much chemistry between them. The song Affirmative Action seems to be the best song The Firm has created, being released in Nas’ album It Was Written. The song is great but Foxy Brown needs to take grade 2 math again. In her verse, she attempts to do math:

Thirty-two grams raw, chop it in half, get sixteen, double it times three
We got forty-eight, which mean a whole lot of cream
Divide the profit by four, subtract it by eight
We back to sixteen

So lets break this math down to see what the answer is.

32/2 = 16.

16 x 2 x 3 = 96. I dont know where Foxy Brown got 48 from …

48/4 = 12.

12-8= 4.

Clearly Foxy Brown doesn’t know how to do math. Good thing shes a rapper and not a mathematician. Other than that the rest of the song is ill. Take a listen:

The Seventh Seal

I’ve been waiting for Rakim’s album for over a year now. It is set to be released on November 17, 2009. Finally, maybe an album worth my money.

His first single was released in July and it shows that the 41 year old Rakim is still as good as ever.

 Lyrics:

[Chorus]
Holy are you
Holy are you
There is no God but you (ah huh)
There is no God but you
(I need to talk to y’all for a minute)
Praised be the Lord
(And be serious for a minute)

Holy are you
Holy are you
There is no God but you
There is no God but you (Rakim Allah)

G-O-D, the God MC
Yeah

For those who find it hard to believe, and it is
Why they call me the God MC, the lyricist
Trace this down to the roots from Genesis
The world wonder, I’m still standing like pyramids
Design so vivid, every brick it got a story to tell
My rhyme flow different like a hieroglyphic
Mind prolific, infinite, like mathematic
The first language, now add that, and add graphics (Go ‘head)
Then go let the blocks know it’s the gospel
Life’s new manual, so watch close
The new Michaelangelo and Pablo Picasso
Prepared to show you the cosmos and rock flows
Even my lyrical metaphysical
What this’ll do is help you get to your spiritual pinnacle
You find your mind too far-fetched for it to fathom
I bring the darkness to the light, split the atom
It’s like watching the big bang theory emerge
I take titles, bond them to reveal new words
They want a clear view
From the farthest and the darkest corners of the universe
To a corner near you
A pharaoh in ghetto apparel, stay blinged up
Fort Knox display, a modern day King Tut
Wrapped tight, rap like I’ve been preserved in time
Spit the holy water, then touch it and turn it to wine
It’s the God

Holy are you
Holy are you
There is no God but you (I am, I am the Alpha and Omega)
There is no God but you
Praised be the Lord

We were children of the most high, so we fell
From paradise to holy hell
Probably descendants of the Holy Grail
Another part of history they won’t reveal
Times’ll only tell
You waiting for Judgment? It came
In the form of a thug in the game
To create a strong position, there’s blood in my vein
The chemical is identical, we one and the same
With seven letters in all three of my government names
Walk on water? Nah, neither did Jesus
It’s a parable to make followers and readers believers
From Egypt to Budapest, Rakim is the truest left
Understand the Scriptures like the minister Louis F
I told you who God is, you ignored me like most the prophets
Jesus, Solomon, Abraham, Moses and Muhammad
I showed the scholars, we’ll fulfill the broken promise
I spit this truth to predict the future like Nostradamus
Like Revelations, I’m hoping my quotes reveal
The seven spirits of God when I open the seal
Interpret the holy Qu’ran, these flows will guide you
Translate the Torah, and decode the Bible
[lyrics courtesy of Killerhiphop.com]
Warn the elders in the mosques, ma-sons, and the law
The seven churches, the synagogues, it’s the Renaissance
Skin is bronze, like the Messiah
Rakim Allah’s ’bout to reveal a bigger secret than time and the God

Holy are you
Holy are you
There is no God but you (I want to challenge you)
There is no God but you (and soon I will challenge you)
Praised be the Lord (I am, I am the Alpha and Omega)

Rakim Allah The God MC
Peace

The self appointed God MC and Microphone Fiend stated in an interview with Billboard in 2007:

“The number 7 has a lot of significance. The 7th letter of the alphabet is G — that stands for God. There are 7 continents, 7 seas. The ‘Seventh Seal’ deals with that and also some revelations in the Bible. Some call it the end of the world but for me it’s the end of the old and the beginning of the new. By me naming my album that, I’m using it metaphorically in hip-hop. I’m hoping to kill the old state of hip-hop and start with the new.”

Then in another interview with Billboard in 2009 he stated:

“The seals are from the Bible- Revelations and the coming of the Apocalypse. But Islam, Judaism, Christianity: all have a version of the same events. The Lion of Judah breaks the seven seals one by one, each imparting knowledge and inflicting catastrophe, ending with seven trumpets announcing the end of Times. After the Apocalypse, God rises from the ashes to recreate the Kingdom, taking only the greatest elements from the past with them.

When you look at Hip-Hop, I want to do that: to spit fire and take our best from the ashes to build our kingdom; to recognize all the regional styles, conscious lyrics, the tracks, underground, mainstream, the way we treat each other. Lose the garbage and rebuild our scene. I’ve always tried to insert consciousness and spirituality in my records, interpreting the writings of all cultures and religions and how they apply to life in modern times.”

Just vintage Rakim, trying to create a new era of hip hop. As Nas said, hip hop might be dead but Rakim could be the one to bring it back to life. As long as “rappers” like Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne stay out of the game, a new golden era of hip hop may be at the path ahead. Until then, I’ll stick to listening to songs before the new millenium.

The Breakdown Of Illmatic

Illmatic

ILLMATIC

Illmatic was the first album released by Nas in 1994. Listening to hip hop is one of my hobbies and I often search up different hip hop albums for hours. One day, I came across this album and it totally changed my entire view of hip hop. Nas became my favourite rapper, or should I say emcee, even though it was based on one album. That’s how perfect it was. The most impressive thing about this album was that Nas only had one guest appearance in his album. The rest of the songs he did solo. This is why I would like to evaluate each track on this classic album, which in my opinion is the best album EVER made to date.

1. The Genesis

Samples Used: Grand Wizard Theodore – Subway Theme, Main Source – Live At The BBQ

This track is the introduction to the album Illmatic. It begins with a sample of Nas spitting his verse in Live At The BBQ. Then the beat changes to Subway Theme where Nas and AZ are having a conversation. The conversation ends with Nas saying, “Niggaz don’t listen man, representing. It’s Illmatic.” And the greatest album of all time was ready to be revealed.

2. New York State Of Mind

Samples Used: Donald Byrd – Flight Time, Joe Chambers – Mind Rain, Eric B. & Rakim – Mahogany

To be honest with you, this is my most favourite track. I listen to it everyday at least once. It uses the beat from Mind Rain with Nas’ genius lyrics. When combined together by DJ Premier (the best producer ever) and with Rakim’s voice sample added in the chorus, it creates a masterpiece. Maybe even the greatest song of all time. The thing I really like about Nas is the way he uses his lyrics to make people think. Just the one line, “Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined” makes you think about the depth and meaning behind those lyrics for days. Even with every line being ingenious, the most memorable line in this song is “It drops deep as it does in my breath/I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death”. Every time I hear this song, it really makes me think in a New York State of Mind.

3. Life’s A Bitch feat. AZ

Samples Used: The Gap Band – Yearning For Your Love

That’s why we get high, cause you never know when you’re gonna go. A classic. The only guest on this album and as much as it hurts to say it, he was better than Nas on this track. AZ, one of my favourite rappers too, just ripped this track with his wicked flow and lyrics. His first verse is insane, just look at the first line and you will see what I mean, “Visualizin the realism of life and actuality/Fuck who’s the baddest a person’s status depends on salary”

4. The World Is Yours

Samples Used: Ahmad Jamal – I Love Music

Whose world is this? The world is yours, the world is yours. It’s mine, it’s mine, it’s mine. The hip hop world is truly Nas’. Along with producer Pete Rock’s dope beat, this track goes real hard. It was so good that even Jay-Z decided to sample it in his song, Dead Presidents II. I love this song because of its perfect blend of jazz and hardcore rap. The relaxing beat plays while Nas does his thing while holding the mic. Once again, another classic.

5. Halftime

Samples Used: Gary Byrd – Soul Travellin’ Pt. I, Average White Band – Schoolboy Crush

The first song I ever heard by Nas. The title is also perfect for the album because it is the 5th song out of 10, making it the song the middle song. The beat is heavy on bass, and Nas spits one of his best lyrical songs ever, just like he said he would, “Cause I’m am ace when I face the bass” Large Professor creates a nice beat that has sleigh bells in the background music that gives the song an upbeat tempo. This is by far one of the most energetic songs by Nas, complimented by the beat. Large Professor + Nas = ? You guessed it, a classic song.

6. Memory Lane

Samples Used: Reuben Wilson – We’re In Love, Lee Dorsey – Get Out Of My Life Woman

How does Premier keep on finding these amazing samples? Sampling part of the song We’re In Love, and the drums from Lee Dorsey’s song, Memory Lane ranks as my favourite beat on Illmatic. Also known as Sittin In Da Park, Nas talks about his past memories of his life, from drug dealing to rap. The song ends with Nas repeating, “The most dangerous MC is.. Commin outta Queensbridge” And indeed the most dangerous MC for the past decade has been the one named Nasir Jones.

7. One Love

Samples Used: Heath Brothers – Smiling Billy Pt. II, Parliament – Come In Out The Rain

Although this song may not be the most famous song titled One Love, it still is an amazing song in its own ways. Q-Tip, a member of ATCQ produced this one song for Nas. He found a nice little sample in the 1975 Heath Brothers’ song, Smiling Billy Part 2. When I first listened to this song, I really didn’t like it. After a while though, the blend of the two melodies really sound good along with the story that Nas tells. The lyrics are really unique because Nas speaks out to his incarcerated brothers.

8. One Time 4 Your Mind

Samples Used: Jimmy Gordon – Walter L

This is my least favourite track on this whole album. (Intro doesn’t count as a track). Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good track but it seems lacking compared to the 8 others. That’s how perfect this album is. In my opinion, the chorus really gets annoying after the first time but like always the verses are still solid.

9. Represent

Samples Used: Lee Erwin – Thief Of Baghdad

This song just reveals the true skills of DJ Premier. For the sample of this track, he had to get it from a song that was released in 1924. Pretty impressive. I also really like Nas’ flow in his verses. His flow is so smooth and fluent while going together with the drum track. Represent is another one of my favourite songs.

10: It Ain’t Hard To Tell

Samples Used: Kool & The Gang – NT, Stanley Clarke – Slow Dance, Michael Jackson – Human Nature

The last song in Illmatic and it didn’t disappoint one bit. Using a loop of Michael Jackson’s famous song Human Nature, combined with the drums from Stanley Clarke’s Slow Dance, Large Professor creates a catchy song. Nas displays his lyricism on this track to the fullest, dropping rhymes like, “Vocabulary spills I’m Ill” sampled by Big L and Mobb Deep. It really ain’t hard to tell that Illmatic is indeed the best hip hop album of all time, The Hip Hop Bible.

Nas Letter To Chicago Youth

Nas speaks out after the murder of Derrion Albert. Some action needed to be taken to stop the violence in Chicago so Nas writes a letter to the children talking about the consequences of  it. Respect to Nas.

Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong wars! Killing each other is definitely played out. Being hurt from the lost of a love one was never cool.

Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong war! I know that feeling, that frustration with life and needing to take it out on someone, any one. But….

We chose the dumbest things to go the hardest for. I remember seeing deaths over 8 ball jackets, Fila sneakers, and name plate chains. Deaths over “he say, she say”!!!!! “I’m from this block or I’m from that block”, or “my moms n pops is f*cked up now the whole world gotta pay”!!!

I remember feeling like I was the hardest “n*gga” breathing. And I couldn’t wait to prove it. But let’s think. What are we really proving?? And proving what to who?? Everybody knows Chicago breeds the strongest of the strong but I just feel, me, being ya brother from another state feels your pain as if I grew up with you in ya very own household.

You have the ability and mindpower to change they way we are looked at. Look who’s watching us young warriors, look who’s throwing us in jail constantly, look at the ignorance in the world. Look at the racist dogs who love to see us down. Loving to bury us in the ground or in jail where we continue this worthless war on one another.

Young warriors…. We are WASTING more and more time. We gotta get on our jobs and take over the world. Cuz this movie left the theaters years ago, Juice, Menace, Boys n the Hood , Blood n Blood Out, Belly!

When we see each other why do we see hatred? Why were we born in a storm, born soldiers, WARRIORS….and instead of building each other up we are at war with each other.. May the soul of this young person find peace with the almighty. I’m with you young warriors. You’re me and I’m you. But trust me! you are fighting the wrong war.

This sh*t sucks !!
